My Peace I Give Unto You
Daily Verse
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.” - John 14:27, KJV
Thoughts for the Day
The Peace Christ Gives
The peace of Christ is not a fragile calm borrowed from pleasant circumstances. It is His own peace, given to troubled hearts, steadying us to trust Him, obey Him, and pray when the world cannot offer rest.
A Christian Voice
“Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work.” - Oswald Chambers
Daily Devotion
On the night before the cross, the Lord Jesus spoke tenderly to His disciples. He did not pretend that sorrow, fear, and confusion would not come. He knew they would soon face His arrest, His crucifixion, and the shaking of all their expectations. Yet into that troubled hour He gave them a promise: “Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.” This was not a polite farewell or a temporary encouragement. It was the gift of His own peace, spoken by the One who was about to bear sin, conquer death, and return to the Father.
The world gives peace only when conditions seem favourable. It offers peace through control, comfort, achievement, approval, distraction, or escape. But such peace cannot endure when health fails, relationships strain, work becomes heavy, conscience is troubled, or the future is uncertain. Christ gives differently. His peace rests not on changing circumstances but on His unchanging person and finished work. Because He has reconciled sinners to God through His blood, the believer may have peace with God. Because He reigns even in suffering, the believer may know the peace of God guarding the heart.
This peace does not make the Christian careless, passive, or untouched by grief. The Lord Himself wept, prayed, suffered, and obeyed. His peace is not the absence of burden, but the presence of trust beneath the burden. It quiets our rebellion, steadies our fears, and brings our hearts back to the Father’s will. When anxious thoughts multiply, Christ does not merely tell us to be stronger; He calls us to abide in Him, to remember His words, and to bring our cares before God in prayer. As Oswald Chambers wrote, “Prayer does not fit us for the greater work; prayer is the greater work.” In prayer, we do not simply prepare to receive peace; we come to the Prince of Peace Himself.
Today, the peace Christ gives may be needed in a private place no one else sees: a family concern, a ministry burden, a decision, a grief, a temptation, or a fear about tomorrow. Do not measure His peace by the noise around you. Receive again what He has given. Let His word correct the false promises of the world. Let His presence rule your heart more than your circumstances. And where peace has been received, become an instrument of peace: speak gently, forgive freely, serve quietly, and point others not to mere optimism, but to the Saviour who says, “my peace I give unto you.”
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, I thank Thee that Thy peace is not like the peace of this world. Forgive me for seeking rest in control, comfort, approval, or easier circumstances more than in Thee. Teach my heart to trust Thy word when I am troubled, and to come honestly before Thee in prayer. Let Thy peace rule over my thoughts, my speech, my decisions, and my relationships today. Help me to remember that Thou art near, faithful, and sufficient. Make me also a vessel of peace to others, speaking with grace and serving with patience. Keep my eyes fixed on Thee, my Saviour and my Lord. Amen.
