New Mercies from a Faithful God
Daily Verse
“It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness.” - Lamentations 3:22-23, KJV
Thoughts for the Day
Mercies for the Morning
The people of God may pass through sorrow, weakness, and chastening, yet they are not consumed, because the LORD is merciful. Each morning is not merely another day to endure, but another witness that His compassions have not failed and His faithfulness remains great.

Daily Devotion
Lamentations is not a book written from a place of ease. Its words rise out of grief, judgment, loss, and deep sorrow. Yet in the midst of lament, the prophet lifts his eyes to a truth stronger than his pain: “It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.” The ruins around him were real, but so were the mercies of God. Faith does not pretend that trouble is light when it is heavy. Faith remembers that even in trouble, the covenant mercy of the LORD has not ended.
There is a holy realism in this verse. We are not preserved because we are strong, wise, deserving, or able to hold ourselves together. We are not consumed because of the LORD’S mercies. If God dealt with us only according to our sins, failures, fears, and unbelief, we could not stand. But His compassions fail not. The believer’s hope rests not in the steadiness of his own heart, but in the unchanging faithfulness of God. He is faithful when our prayers are weak, when our obedience is imperfect, when our minds are troubled, and when the path ahead is unclear.
“They are new every morning.” This does not mean yesterday’s mercy was insufficient, but that God’s care is fresh for each day He appoints. We do not need tomorrow’s strength today. We are called to receive today’s mercy for today’s obedience. The Lord who sustained us yesterday has not exhausted His compassion. The morning light is a quiet reminder that God has kept us, spared us, and called us again to trust Him. Before the duties, burdens, conversations, decisions, and temptations of the day arrive, His faithfulness is already there.
William Carey’s words, “Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God,” are not rooted in human ambition, but in confidence in the faithful God. Because His mercies are new, we may rise from discouragement. Because His compassions fail not, we may serve without despair. Because His faithfulness is great, we may obey in small things and attempt what He sets before us for His glory. Today is not sustained by our feelings, but by His mercy. Let us begin it humbly, gratefully, and faithfully before the Lord.
Prayer
Faithful LORD, I thank Thee that Thy mercies have kept me and that Thy compassions fail not. I confess that I often begin the day depending on my own strength, wisdom, and plans, rather than resting in Thy faithfulness. Teach me to receive today’s mercy with a humble and thankful heart. Keep me from despair over yesterday’s failures and from anxiety about tomorrow’s burdens. Help me to walk before Thee in obedience, patience, and love. Make me useful to others today, and let my words and actions bear witness to Thy goodness. Great is Thy faithfulness, O Lord; keep my heart near to Thee. Amen.
Walk in faith today
Begin the day by naming one specific mercy God has shown you, thank Him for it in prayer, and then obey faithfully in one duty you have been tempted to delay.
